Archizines is curated by Elias Redstone and initiated in collaboration with the Architectural Association School of Architecture that celebrates and promotes the recent resurgence of alternative and independent architectural publishing from around the world.

The publications came from all over the world and varied in style and content. The commonality is a shared interest in documenting and discussing the spaces we occupy in printed form. The criteria for inclusion in the collection as set by Redstone is that publications must have been launched after 2000 and are still in production, that architecture and/or urbanism must be intrinsic to the publication and an alternative or independent agenda must be demonstrated. As well as adding to architectural discourse, these publications are lovingly made objects to hold and to keep.

Design Challenge

Teams from art, architecture, graphic design and curating were invited to develop a prototype archizine during an 8-week period with the winning prototype going into production.

The purpose of the competition was to enhance the volume of architectural discourse, to critically engage a common ground and popular culture of publishing within architecture. The subject matter and content had to be related to architecture, which could include research, spatial practice, art, built environment, social, urban, political and related issues.

The competition was open to all, for example: Architects, Designers, Urbanists, Graduates, Students, Artists, Photographers, Curators, Editors, Writers, etc… anyone interested in discussing the buildings and spaces we inhabit. Submissions can come from one person or a team of people.

Design Challenge winner

SET was a new zine by the Set Collective that examined the relationship between architecture and cinema. Edited by Jamie Young, Graduate of UCD School of Architecture and designed by Paul Guinan, the first edition “The Shining’s Maze of Indeterminacy” was written by Emma Dwyer.

The jury, Elias Redstone (Curator, Archizines), Nathalie Weadick (Director, IAF), Alex Milton (Head of Design, NCAD), Stephen Mulhall (Editor, Building Material, AAI) and Ciaran Smith (Plus Print), said they ‘liked the clarity of idea in SET, the response to audience and the potential to develop this zine into an archive and collectible’. Elias Redstone, curator of Archizines said he was delighted to include SET in the international Archizines Collection.
