In February we welcomed Dr. Sarah Sheridan and Dr. Brian Ward to the team in the IAF as our Curating Architecture Residents. They proposed to shine alight on the often overlooked work of Irish Architecture pioneer Marion Mahony Griffin.
The IAF curatorial residency, exhibition, and associated events programme is made possible with funding from the Arts Council’s Engaging with Architecture Scheme.
The successful residency proposal of Sarah Sheridan and Brian Ward draws attention to the life and career of Marion Mahony Griffin (1871-1961), one of America’s earliest professional female architects. The daughter of an emigrant from Cork, she played a pivotal role in the studio of Frank Lloyd Wright and in town planning and architecture in America, Australia and India.
Curating Architecture Residency
Funded by a successful application to the Arts Council ‘Engaging with Architecture’ fund and running from February to July 2019 in the IAF, ‘Marion Mahony Griffin: Discuss’ is a curatorial residency by Sarah Sheridan and Brian Ward.
The successful residency proposal of Sarah Sheridan and Brian Ward draws attention to the life and career of Marion Mahony Griffin (1871-1961), one of America’s earliest professional female architects. The daughter of an emigrant from Cork, she played a pivotal role in the studio of Frank Lloyd Wright and in town planning and architecture in America, Australia and India.
Inspired by Mahony Griffin’s radical reimagining of the studio and domestic environment, it is envisaged that a similarly engaging studio/gallery/domestic/work environment will be created. This exhibition will also be informed by ongoing discussions within a cross-disciplinary Mahony Griffin book club that will analyse and discuss extracts from her unpublished four-volume memoir, ‘The Magic of America’. The book club will host a public discussion event as part of the International Literature Festival Dublin. It is envisaged that a close reading of this text, as a work that challenges the conventional idea of the autobiography, will help illuminate Mahony Griffin’s distinct contribution to the history and historiography of architecture and town planning.
Dr. Sarah A. Sheridan is a lecturer in Dublin School of Architecture, Technological University Dublin. She practiced as an architect in Dublin and Sydney for several years, before working as an architectural researcher with ERG, UCD . She taught and researched at UCD School of Architecture and holds a PhD from UCD. Actively researching architecture, she has contributed to many conferences nationally and internationally.
Dr. Brian Ward is a lecturer in the Dublin School of Architecture at the Technological University Dublin. After graduating from UCD Architecture, he worked with a number of award-winning practices in Ireland. His PhD examined the history of town planning in Edwardian Dublin. Brian has contributed to various publications on modern architecture and town planning in Ireland.

This public event is inspired by a cross-disciplinary Mahony Griffin book club curated by Sarah Sheridan and Brian Ward and including Kelly Fitzgerald, Alan Mee, Kathryn Milligan and Ellen Rowley.

The conference aims to explore topics such as women designers in the Museum’s collections and whether it is important that designers are recognised and remembered as women.
