Inter/Generation – November 2013 – April 2014

21.01.14

Inter/Generation the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council first substantial architecture programme. This project aims to build on dlr’s strong record of high quality public engagement and creative participation. Most of the Inter/Generation events will be located at the Grainstore dlr’s unique Youth Arts Facility during the Easter holiday period in April.

This innovative programme of hands-on architectural projects will be lead by architect John McLaughlin and involves a comprehensive series of innovative architectural projects. As the name suggests Inter/Generation is about getting people of all ages to think more about architecture and the built environment by looking at architecture’s role in shaping and changing where we live.

Our Street – a multigenerational project for older people (Shankill Old Folks Association) and children from a local national school (St. Annes National School). Both groups will focus on how the Shankill High Street has physically and visually changed over the years Our Street is led by architect and artist couple Aoife + David Dwyer (Box Urban), and will run from November 2013 to April 2014.

Card Arch – consist of a collaborative project by architect/artist Blaithín Quinn and artist Helen Barry who will lead a series of children’s workshops over the Easter holidays, looking at the building potential of cardboard. Card Arch will be accompanied by an interactive exhibition.

An Expanded Practice Weekend – on 12/13 April 2014 there will be series of interrelated workshops for architects and arts practitioners led by architect Dominic Stevens, architect Peter Tansey, architect/artist Blaithin Quinn and architect/artist duo Culturstruction (Jo Anne Butler and Tara Kennedy). The structures created will then be displayed in and around the Grainstore over the Easter holidays 2014.

Arch-Cinema – a celebration of architecture related films suitable for all ages screened in the Grainstore in April 2014. Titles include; The Fountainhead; My Architect – A Son’s Journey and The Draftsman’s Contract.

Minecrafted – a series of workshops and an online project using the popular computer game Minecraft to explore virtual spaces and construct buildings and landscapes. These workshops are aimed at children and young people.

A Sensory Public Realm – will be constructed in Cabinteely Park. Designed by architect Aoibheann Ní Mhearainn, it will allow audiences of all ages to experience space through senses other than just the visual.

Viewfinder – a project by John McLaughlin who will design and build a series of architectural viewfinders in Killiney Hill Park. These framing devices will enable the viewer to compare the contemporary view with the eighteenth century Italianate landscape paintings of the same sites. In this way people will be able to appreciate how much the landscape has changed over time. A series of walks and talks involving local history groups is planned around this project.

Inter/Generation is supported by The Arts Council.
