This morning Tate Britain announced the four artists shortlisted for the 2015 Turner Prize (12 May). Artists Bonnie Camplin, Janice Kerbel and Nicole Wermers have all been selected for the 2015 exhibition, alongside design collective Assemble.

The group of young unqualified designers have made a name for themselves by creating immersive projects, that lie somewhere between architecture, art and community engagement. Their portfolio includes everything from temporary theatre structures and artists’ studio spaces to community housing strategies and new town squares.

Assemble have been nominated for a Liverpool housing estate they transformed with the communities living there. The Granby Four Streets are a cluster of terraced houses in Toxteth, Liverpool that were built around 1900. During the 80s they fell into disrepair and were earmarked for demolition. The remaining local residents fought the plans for demolition. Over the past 10 years they have cleaned and planted their streets, painted the empty houses, organised a thriving monthly market, founded a Community Land Trust and shown their area in a different light.

Assemble worked with the Granby Four Streets CLT and Steinbeck Studios to present a sustainable vision for the area that builds on the locals’ hard work. Assemble’s design is to celebrate the value of the area’s architectural and cultural heritage, using low-cost materials and demolition waste to revamp the houses, from artist-designed fireplaces to a proposed ‘winter garden’ in the empty shell of a gutted house. Their approach is to support public involvement, offer training and employment and to nurture the resourcefulness and DIY spirit of the four streets.

The exhibition will be held at Tramway, Glasgow, in October and the winner will be announced in December.
