The Irish Georgian Society/Ulster Architectural Heritage Society Cross Border Summer School once again brings together students, professionals and enthusiasts to explore aspects of their shared built heritage. In seeking to inform on the subject of conservation, and promote best practice through direct engagement with experts and practitioners, the 2017 Summer School will explore as its theme the contribution of place and placemaking within the historic environments of north-west Ulster. As well as examining local experiences in the region, the Summer School will also look beyond the island of Ireland, and seek to draw inspiration from international models.
The 2017 programme aims to investigate the various factors that define places and shape their built environments, and to explore how buildings and places can be positively harnessed to support good conservation practice in ways that are mutually beneficial to the building and the people who use them. This year’s programme will commence in Derry, exploring the city and its environs before moving to Ramelton to study the buildings and landscapes of rural Donegal.

There will be many opportunities to visit and engage with the history and heritage of the area through talks, site visits to vernacular and civic buildings of architectural interest, demonstrations of traditional building skills and open discussions.

Members and non-members are welcome to attend. Tickets for the event cost €70-€240. In addition to access to all the talks and tours, tickets cover all meals and transportation to and from venues each day.
