Close the Gap
Cruth Curach, a dramatic temporary pavilion based on the shape of currach boats, has toured various locations around the country, including Merrion Square for Open House Dublin, University of Limerick for Design Week, and Stradbally Co. Laois for Electric Picnic – its maiden voyage.
Winner of the ‘Craftitecture’ competition organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and the Crafts Council of Ireland, Cruth Curach was designed and handcrafted by architects Bulcholz McEvoy and Jim and Conall Horgan of the Galway School of Boat Building and constructed using the form of five currachs, in celebration of the Year of Craft 2011 on the island of Ireland. Not only a fascinating meeting point between architecture and craft, this stunning sculptural form has been a venue for a host of talks and performances including music from Na Piobairi Uilleann, talks by Clancy Moore Architects, the Irish Design Shop, Garrett O’Hagan and Una Burke.
