Momentum

An exhibition taking place at the Irish Architecture Foundation’s building on Dublin’s Bachelor’s Walk in Summer 2021.

Momentum is the title of a biannual programme at the Irish Architecture Foundation’s building, a vibrant centre for architecture in Dublin. The programme seeks to create a space, physically and introspectively, to document, contextualise and introduce to the public, the work of emerging architects and collectives, around whom exists a growing critical and curatorial consensus. It also advances the IAF’s ambition to create more opportunities for more architectural exhibitions and to enhance a culture for curating architecture in Ireland.

The intimate space of the gallery at the IAF base on Bachelor’s Walk allows the architect to test a theory, revisit an old idea afresh, or present a proposition that can enhance their practice beyond the exhibition. The IAF gallery is used as a stopping off point, a paused moment for reflection on the way to something significant.

In 2021 the Momentum architects chosen – Noreile Breen, t o b Architect and plattenbaustudio, are re-imagining the future of architecture practice, and their work demonstrates a high degree of sensitivity to context, to the environment and to the public. The exhibition will be supported by the beautiful publication Momentum designed by Peter Maybury.

Architect Biographies

Noreile Breen studied architecture at the Dublin School of Architecture, DIT and worked with Atelier Bow-Wow in Japan and Steve Larkin Architects before establishing her own practice, based between Dublin and Kerry. Her practice is focused on creating buildings which have a rich spatial character with distinct qualities of light and are rooted in the built heritage of the Irish rural landscape.

Noreile has taught architecture at KTH Stockholm, Bergen School of Architecture, Parsons School of Design New York, Queen’s University Belfast and the School of Architecture University Limerick where she is currently a lecturer. Noreile is the recipient of a number of awards, a registered architect with the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland and a Grade 3 Architect Accredited in Conservation. http://www.noreilebreen.ie/

t o b Architect is an explorative, critical architectural practice based in Dublin and Co. Tipperary, Ireland. It was founded by Thomas O Brien in 2013 and since then has earned a reputation as an expansive practice that incorporates an ongoing examination of the complex inter-related nature of material things, humans, animals, and plants into each project.

The practice has been recognised domestically and internationally, receiving an Architectural Association Award 2019 for Killan Farmhouse, and being shortlisted for the international Architectural Review Emerging Architect prize in 2018. Thomas has been supported by an Arts Council Bursary in 2020. Thomas is a Design Fellow at University College Dublin where he teaches in the first year studio. https://tobarchitect.ie/

plattenbaustudio is an architecture and drawing studio founded by architects Jonathan Janssens and Jennifer O’Donnell in 2018. Based between Berlin and Dublin, the studio focuses on the design of architectural projects in parallel to their work in the fields of architectural communication, exhibition and research, and their primary interest lies in the realities of architecture in use; in the everyday inhabitation of space and the appropriation of the built environment by its users. Plattenbaustudio’s approach to architecture is guided by critical observation. Part of the studio is dedicated to the development of contemporary architectural drawing, and the studio uses its drawings as tools with which to study, communicate and design for the complexities of the built environment.

Plattenbaustudio’s drawings have been exhibited at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin in 2021, at the Irish Museum of Modern Art as part of the group show A Vague Anxiety in 2019, at the Irish Embassy Berlin, the City Assembly House in Dublin, and at the London Design Museum (Tank). The studio was awarded a Fellowship at the Akademie der Künste Berlin in 2020, an Irish Arts Council Architecture Bursary in 2019 and the Visual Arts Award by the Irish Embassy Berlin in 2018. https://www.plattenbaustudio.com/
