Standard Lives

08.10.15

Standard Lives is a series of talks celebrating the ignored and overlooked side of Irish architecture and design. Each event is conceived as a ‘live magazine’ bringing together a range of speakers from a variety of different backgrounds. Four contributors – from the worlds of art, architecture, academia and writing – will make a short presentation on each occasion, with the session’s theme changing from evening-to-evening.

The first talk will takes place in conjunction with Open House Dublin and adopts the festival’s theme, This Place We Call Home – an opportunity to consider the big ideas and the little routines which shape our city, the perception of the familiar and unfamiliar in everyday life, and the role housing plays in our collective imagination.

For the opening event of the series, Michael Pike (architect, GKMP), Conor Skehan (DIT / The Housing Agency), Shane Lynam (photographer), and Rob Doyle (Author, Here Are The Young Men) will each approach the theme of This Place We Call Home from their own unique perspectives and disciplines.

Regardless of the topic at hand, it is our hope that with each talk we might reveal some of the stories behind the ordinary architecture and everyday icons that shape Irish life. Jumping across scales – from the state of the nation to the state of your manky shower – no aspect of design is understood as being too significant or too small.

The first talk will take place at 7pm, Tuesday 13 October at Liberty Hall Theatre. Tickets are free and may be booked via the Open House Dublin website.

Standard Lives is organised by 2ha magazine / TYPE, and is supported by Irish Design 2015.
