Lotus Architects, headed by Peter Tansey, were selected through an open competition process to design an innovative and adventurous new play space for the town. The design is structured around gently terraced platforms linked by slides, steps and a mirrored tunnel. Linked to the town’s maritime history, the design includes a variety of seating and climbing equipment for different ages made from wood and rope. A zip-wire travels the length of the site and visitors can also enjoy seeing their reflections in a series of curved mirror pillars. Existing features of the site in Killybegs are sensitively incorporated into the design, with some play areas sheltered by the old tree and a quiet area surrounding the monument to seafarers. Situated at the entrance to the town of Killybegs, the gateway features a striking concrete relief map of the local coast and elevated string lights to identify the space at night.

Children are the experts when it comes to play and the commissioners worked with the IAF on a process for including young people in the development of the play space. Play expert Jackie Bourke of playtime.ie was engaged to find out what Killybegs children wanted from their new Play Space. “Adventure, fun and imagination” were top of the list and Lotus Architects have responded with a design that will provide hours of fun and inspiration.
