The Architectural Association of Ireland is a voluntary organisation, founded in 1896, with the aim of promoting greater discussion, dissemination and engagement in architecture and the built environment. We host an annual series of lectures open to the public and would like to extend an invitation to the public this #Architober for the following:

Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth Exhibition – Throughout October

The Irish Architectural Archive (IAA) explores extraterritorial space in an exciting new exhibition by Patrick Hough and Fiona Marron, who were the Archive’s inaugural artists-in-residence in 2019. Gleaning their exhibition title from visionary architect R. Buckminster Fuller’s 1968 book, Operating Manual For Spaceship Earth, Hough and Marron show new work inspired by the three-million-plus items the IAA holds, which they consider – like space – “of unknowable dimensions – full of adventure, surprising and unexpected encounters”. Also part of the exhibition are John Carson and Stuart Whipps. Together they advocate us to unhinge our inquisitiveness, and search for progressive forms of knowledge.  The exhibition runs throughout October. https://iarc.ie/exhibitions/

 After Bauhaus – Exhibition by Albert Weis – Until 17 October

The Dublin architecture gallery, darc space, was set up in the offices of Denis Byrne Architects as a space to present and debate topical issues relating to the built environment. In the centenary year of the famous German Bauhaus school, which was founded in 1919 in Weimar by architect Walter Gropius, the gallery presents After Bauhaus, an exhibition by Berlin-based artist Albert Weis.  Although the Bauhaus was only active until 1933, its influence on design and architecture continues until today. In darc space, Albert Weis explores the Bauhaus influence on his own work. A late work by Walter Gropius, the so-called Gropius Stadt in Berlin, is presented in an atmospheric film projected through a steel sculpture. The exhibition continues until 17 October 2019 in darc space, 26 North Great George’s Street, Dublin 1.

Close Encounter: Meetings with Remarkable Buildings – in VISUAL Carlow

From 20 September 2019 to 19 January 2020

Produced by the Irish Architecture Foundation, and funded by the Arts Council, the aim of the tour was to enable sixteen Irish architect teams, who were invited to participate at the 2018 Architecture Biennale in Venice, by Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell, to present their work to an Irish audience. 100 square metres of work signifies a substantial and unique installation by our current generation of architects.

Open House Dublin (OHD) is Ireland’s largest architecture festival delivered by the Irish Architecture Foundation, inviting everyone to explore Dublin city. It works through a simple but powerful idea: showcasing outstanding architecture for everyone to experience. The festival also provides tours of parks and the public realm, exhibitions, talks and workshops. Reimagine across October

Reimagine is an IAF initiative that is currently engaged in 6 towns across Ireland to co-create and co-design solutions to challenges by bringing together the community, architects, artists, designers and planners to work on solutions. #Architober we will announce two Open Calls for design teams to work on projects in Loughrea and Letterkenny.  City Conversations 29^th October

City Conversations is a partnership with CREATE that explores how arts and architectural initiatives can animate the public sphere and reimagine our cities, towns and neighbourhoods. Javier Rodrigo, is an art educator and researcher from Barcelona, who has carried out projects for collaborative practices on the pedagogy of art and participative town planning. Open House Cork – 4-5 October

Open House Cork is on the weekend of 4-6 October 2019. VICTORIAN DUBLIN REVEALED: 19th-Century Architectural Heritage lecture series

Throughout October and November

The Irish Georgian Society is partnering with Dublin City Council’s Heritage Office to deliver the Victorian Dublin Revealed lecture series. Delivered by established academics, authors, architects and conservationists, the lectures will celebrate the rich architectural legacy of the Victorians. The series will delve into Dublin’s 19th-century built heritage; examining the city’s domestic, ecclesiastical, commercial, philanthropic, cultural and infrastructural architecture and place the buildings in their political, social and economic context.  The lectures are for anyone with an interest in the built heritage, and are also recognised as formal continuing professional development by the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland, Engineers Ireland and the CIF Register of Heritage Contractors.

Announcement of the IGS Architectural Conservation Awards – 9 October, 6pm

The Irish Georgian Society’s Conservation Awards aim to encourage excellence in the area of conservation and to celebrate those conservation professionals and practitioners responsible for projects of merit. The awards will be presented in the following two categories:

Category 1: for a Conservation Project by architects in Ireland or Irish architectural firms, building surveyors and other professionals involved in the conservation of historic buildings in Ireland.

RIAI Conference 2019: Climate Change | Housing | Placemaking – 4 and 5 October

Climate Change, Housing, Placemaking are the big topics of Irish society and each of these themes is also critical for the practice of architecture in Ireland today and into the future. The RIAI Conference presents new thinking under these themes and has invited a fantastic line-up of 20 national and international speakers – all experts in their field. The Conference takes place on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 October in the RDS, alongside the Architecture + Building Expo which presents innovative building materials and technologies and is a great opportunity for networking.  Keynote speaker on Friday 4 October is the award-winning Irish-American architect Lorcan O’Herlihy. Speaking on the theme of ‘Social Occupation’, O’Herlihy argues that “as architects, we have a responsibility to cities and the people who occupy them”.  There is also session on ‘Learning from Towns’ with the Dutch Chief Government Architect, Floris van Alkemade and other speakers including the Team from Free Market, which represented Ireland at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale.  Dr Sabina Brennan, a Trinity College psychologist, neuroscientist and author of the No 1 best-seller 100 Days to a Younger Brain, will present her research on brain health.  On Saturday 5 October, Swedish Architect Monica von Schmalensee and Irish Architect John Tuomey will be discussing ‘Creating a Culture of Quality Architecture’. Ciaran Cuffe, Architect and MEP, leads the session on Climate Change and a panel of Architects and Economist Marc Coleman will discuss Visions and Ideas for Ireland 2070. RIAI Awards 2019 – Wexford County Headquarters

The RIAI Awards are the premier Irish architecture awards. They celebrate the work of RIAI members and highlight the contribution that architects make to society and the built environment for everyone’s benefit. Marking thirty years of the awards programme, the RIAI announced this year 23 award winners across 14 categories.  The RIAI Awards are on view in the offices of Wexford County Council until 4 October. The exhibition can be viewed during office hours of Monday to Friday 9.00am – 5.00pm.  The exhibition forms part of a public awareness campaign on the importance and role of architecture in our everyday lives, which is run by Wexford County Council in association with Creative Ireland. Creating Places for People: RIAI Town and Village Toolkit – Online Resource

The RIAI Town and Village Toolkit is available throughout the autumn as a free online resource. The Toolkit has been developed by the RIAI and the RIAI Urban Design Committee to provide expert advice for people to assess the quality of the towns and villages where they live, work or have responsibility.  Each chapter contains a set of principles and objectives under the six themes: 1) Health, Well-being & Happiness; 2) Connectivity, Accessibility & Movement; 3) Variety & Viability; 4) Environmental Sustainability; 5) A Sense of Place, Urban Form & Character; and 6) Vision, Governance & Management Co-ordination. Queen’s Architecture Society (ArcSoc) in partnership with the Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA) is delighted to invite you to a public talk by Paul McAlister of Paul McAlister Architects. Paul McAlister has over 15 years’ experience in the field of sustainable design in architecture. He is the first certified Passive House designer in Northern Ireland. Paul McAlister talks about the architectural process from concept design sketches to 3D visualisations and the importance of retaining the original idea for the project.

ArcSoc Lecture: Sean Griffiths

In a career spanning 30 years, Sean Griffiths has practiced as an architect, artist and academic. He is has also published writings on architecture in books, magazines and online journals. Sean currently practices under the name Modern Architect and his current work is generated by research into chance, contingency and indeterminacy. From 1991 until 2014, Sean was a founding director of the English art and architecture practice FAT, where he was responsible for some of its best-known works, such as the Blue House, St Lucas Art School and the BBC Wales television studios. FAT dissolved shortly after it represented the UK at the 2014 Venice Biennale. Sean is currently Professor of Architecture at the University of Westminster in London and has been a Visiting Professor of Architectural Design on numerous occasions at Yale School of Architecture.

RSUA Architecture Night 2019 – 18 October

This great social and cultural evening, hosted by the RSUA, will focus on the power of architecture to bring about positive change. It all kicks off at 7pm on Friday 18 October 2019. The venue this year is the former Masonic Hall of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Antrim in Rosemary Street.  This three-storey stone piece of hidden Belfast was designed by Young & Mackenzie and is finding new purpose in the regeneration of Belfast City Centre.  At a time when interest in heritage-led regeneration is growing in Belfast, this former Masonic Hall provides a perfect location to celebrate local architecture. The MC for the evening is BBC’s Ireland correspondent Mark Simpson, who will guide guests through the three parts of the evening. Part 1 confers Honorary Membership in recognition of those who have contributed to architecture in Northern Ireland.  Part 2 will focus on the best architecture students.  Part 3 will reveal the outcome of the Design Competition for Early Career Architects. Each of the three parts to the evening will have its own distinctive live music and round of food. Once again there will be no set tables and a complimentary bar will be available throughout the evening. Dress is freestyle but warm.

Peter Hutchinson Exhibition – ends 28 October

An exhibition of works by Peter Hutchinson, Chartered Landscape Architect, Chartered Designer, illustrator, product designer and artist, is being curated at RSUA.  This exhibition includes items from his Eas-L and 5/22 griD series, which were recently displayed at the Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast.

Peter’s work has won awards nationally and internationally and has been exhibited widely in Ireland and the UK, including at the Royal Ulster Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy, and the London Transport Museum.  The works on display are available for purchase and the exhibition closes on 28 October
