We are now asking for architects and architectural graduates to apply to participate in the 2019/20 programme, kicking off this September and finishing by spring 2020.
The Irish Architecture Foundation has been delivering the National Architects in Schools Initiative since 2013, with over 80 schools around the country and 80 graduates and architects at all career stages taking part to date. We are now asking for architects and architectural graduates to apply to participate in the 2019/20 programme, kicking off this September and finishing by spring 2020. Architects/graduates are required to work in schools in Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Laois, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Roscommon, Tipperary, Waterford and Wicklow.
Participating architects/graduates work in close collaboration with teachers of Art, Craft and Design, Design and Communication Graphics, Construction Studies and other subject areas to devise and deliver a hands-on design project, usually delivered in a Transition Year classroom. Projects are typically hypothetical in nature and give students the opportunity to identify issues or opportunities for change in their classroom, school or local community and create design solutions for these situations. Students are guided through the design process from research, surveying and mapping through to ideation and iteration and then they communicate their final ideas through drawing, modelmaking, photography, film and more.
Architects/graduates are contracted for 20 hours work, split roughly into 8 hours planning, preparation and research and 12 hours class contact time, scheduled to fit both the school timetable and the architect’s work commitments as best as possible. Architects/graduates are asked to help students prepare materials for the programme’s national exhibition, typically held in April of each year. Participating architects/graduates will be required to attend a skills sharing day in Dublin on 25 September 2019 and will receive 20 structured CPD points for the time they spend working on the programme. They also receive a fee of €1000, inclusive of any taxes required and expenses incurred.
