Theme: ‘Not Too Late: Design Thinking for Ecological Futures’

Under the theme of ‘Not Too Late: Design Thinking for Ecological Futures’, the 12th annual conference of the All-Ireland Architecture Research Group (AIARG) explores the shifts required in architectural thinking to address climate change. Rebecca Solnit’s and Thelma Young Lutunatabua’s project, Not Too Late, invites us to think optimistically about the future. This conference will support a Higher Education Authority-sponsored revision of Irish architectural education – Resilient Design Curricula for 21st Century Design Professionals. The conference invites local and global perspectives on how architectural teaching, practice, research, and policy can address the urgent challenge of climate change.
The AIARG are interested in research that addresses our sense of temporality during the climate crisis, mitigating a feeling of lateness by asserting the value of the future tense in architecture. Papers could address themes including, but not limited to: Climate Activism and Architecture; The Collaborative Practitioner; Participatory Design; Histories of Environmental Architecture; Cultural Attitudes to Urbanisation and Density; Info-graphics and Decarbonisation; Drawing and Visualising Climate Narratives; Material, Waste, Resources and Circularity; Optimising the Use of Existing Building Stock; Technologies of Embodied and Operational Carbon; Future Cities; Landscape Ecologies and the Greening of Urban Open Space; Architectures for the More than Human; Nature-based Solutions; Teaching and Learning for the Climate Agenda; Platform Urbanism; and Radical Architectural Pedagogies.
The AIARG are seeking abstracts from practitioners, theoreticians, and educators and welcome proposals for alternative media, such as roundtable discussions, performances, exhibitions, posters, etc.
Abstracts (limited to one per individual) of not more than 300 words should be sent to allirelandarchitecture@gmail.com no later than Thursday 12 January 2023.
The conference is an initiative of the All-Ireland Architecture Research Group (AIARG) and key event partners. Established in 2010, the All-Ireland Architecture Research Group (AIARG) is a network of researchers from nine higher education institutions in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and professionals interested in architectural research. It is at the forefront of establishing a nexus of relationships between research, education, and practice within the field. AIARG seeks to facilitate and foster ongoing development in architecture as a research field in Ireland by providing an infrastructure for research in the form of conferences and peer-review publication opportunities and by raising the profile of research within the education of architects and their subsequent careers as practitioners.
