In an exciting new initiative IMMA invited us to take over a gallery space during the Eileen Gray exhibition. Our’s activity comprised a group show and a series of talks, screenings, happenings, symposia and workshops.
The IAF@IMMA programme was kindly sponsored by The Marker Hotel, Brehon Capital Partners and further supported by the Philanthropy Leverage Initiative of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.
The Everyday Experience
Project Space
The group-show, curated by Nathalie Weadick, Director of IAF, of national and international architects, designers, artists, filmmakers and writers revealed how much of our experience of the designed or informal built environment is immersed in the everyday. The exhibition contains work by Pablo Bronstein (Artist AR), Celine Condorelli (Artist UK), Culturstruction (Design Studio IRL) & Renate Henschke (Fashion and Costume Designer AU), Cristian Manzutto (Film-maker MEX), Tom dePaor (Architect IRL) & Peter Maybury (Artist IRL), Ciarán ÓGaora (Designer IRL), John Gerrard (Artist IRL) in collaboration with A2 Architects (IRL), Dominic Stevens (Architect IRL), Urban Agency (Architects IRL/DK) & Gregory Dunn (Artist IRL), Milton & Martin (Designers UK) and Kevin O’Brien (Architect AU). With additional support from the Embassy of Mexico.
Conversations on the bench
Project Space
Nathalie Weadick, curator of The Everyday Experience, conducted informal conversations in the gallery space about the show with a selection of architects, designers, artists, filmmakers and writers from the show.
The Extraordinary Experimental
Workshops especially designed for Transition Year groups where 14-16 year olds interrogated the impact of architecture and design on everyday ‘ordinary’ life. Inspired by the exhibition The Everyday Experience and Eileen Gray, they explored the potential for transformation from the ‘ordinary’ into the ‘extraordinary’ through the creation of life-size temporary installations.
An Ordinary Place
Lisa Cassidy (Writer & Blogger IRL) delivered walking tours starting in the IMMA courtyard that consider the architecture of everyday life in the immediate surroundings of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, threading between the literal present and other points in time and space.
SET Collective: Architectural zine and film screenings
Lecture Room
SET Collective (IRL) took the form of a limited run newsprint publication, produced specifically for The Everyday Experience. It consisted of three illustrated essays by Stephen Mulhall (nineteeneighty IRL), Tom Keeley (Range Editions UK) and Theo Simpson (Mass Observation UK), with accompanying Sunday matinee screenings in the Lecture Room.
Architects in Schools Colloquium
Lecture Room
In April 2013 the IAF launched the new National Architects in Schools Initiative. The participating architects and teachers are invited to discuss their experience and the value of the initiative. The event included short presentations on architecture projects with second level students.
