Tallaght was selected as one of six towns to work with the IAF in ‘Reimagine…’. The project ran over 11 months and during that time, hundreds of people in Tallaght spoke about what they would like to see in their locality. Library Square was identified as the ideal site. Ideas were developed about how to connect this area to the buildings, cultural organisations and spaces surrounding it, in a way to ‘Melt the Walls’.
The public wanted to see the activities in the surrounding buildings spill out into the space, introduce greenery and places to sit in Library Square. Following public consultation, the IAF ran a nationwide competition for architects, designers and multidisciplinary teams to suggest how they might answer these needs. Local Tallaght residents were invited to adjudicate on the entries. The structure you see here is the winning result of this competition.
Designed by OBFA Architects, and constructed by AB Projects, this installation is designed to be a conversation starting point for users of the square and to initiate discussions for possible long-term plans for this area. Users are encouraged to sit and occupy the space, engage with the installation, and change their perspective of Library Square.
The project is run by the IAF and is funded by Creative Ireland South Dublin and South Dublin County Council in partnership with South Dublin County Council Arts Office and Tallaght Community Arts. It is produced with the Civic Theatre, Rua Red, South Dublin County Parks & Landscaping, Tallaght Library and the Mother Tongues Festival.
