Every year millions of Europeans visit historical monuments and sites throughout Europe on European Heritage Days. These are a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union in which over forty countries participate each year. The main aim of European Heritage Days are to promote awareness of our built, natural and cultural heritage and to promote Europe’s common cultural heritage. In Ireland we celebrate European Heritage Days with a full week of events throughout National Heritage Week from 23 – 31 August.
National Heritage Week also includes events that focus on architecture and the built environment, such as ‘Inside St Davnet’s’, which will give the public an opportunity to engage with the history of the asylum in a real and hands-on way through sampling early patient menus and exploring the complex with architectural historian Dr. Niamh Nic Ghabhann.
National Heritage Week is NOT an IAF event and is delivered by National Heritage Week for more information please visit this website.
