Focusing on Dublin 1, the fieldwalk will take a look at how Dublin was ‘sold’ to tourists who might have visited Dublin in 1917 or 1918. Despite the continuing war in Europe and the aftermath of the Rising, there was still a tourism industry, though Americans were in short supply. A popular guide to the city at the time was that produced by the Ward Lock company. In that guide were three suggested walks. With Dr Joe Brady (UCD), we are going to follow one of them and get a sense of what it was felt that the visitor ‘should’ see. The tour will also give a sense of the early history of social housing in Dublin.
