Capstones Shift: Architectural Legacies of the Easter Rising

16.02.16

‘Capstones shift, nothing resettles right. Telluric ash and fire-spores boil away.’
– Seamus Heaney, ‘Anything Can Happen’

To mark the Centenary of 1916, the Irish Architectural Archive (IAA), the RIAI and its journal Architecture Ireland are collaborating in a joint programme of lectures and articles entitled ‘Capstones Shift: Architectural Legacies of the Easter Rising’. An associated exhibition, supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, will run in the IAA in June.

In the first lecture in the series, Stephen Ferguson, Assistant Secretary and Museum Curator, An Post discusses the historic development of the GPO and its destruction in the Rising at the RIAI on 23 February, 6pm. Stephen is joined by architect Brian Kavanagh, whose practice Kavanagh Tuite Architects have been responsible for a new exhibition venue at the GPO.
