Open House Limerick 2016

07.10.16-09.10.16

Many of Limerick’s architectural treasures, such as Ballantyne Mills, Ranks Silo, West Limerick Children’s Centre and Shannon Rowing Club, will open their doors to the public for the very first time as part of Open House Limerick 2016.

Now in its fifth year, this festival of architecture will take place from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 October 2016 across Limerick City and County. Open House Limerick 2016 invites everyone to explore and understand the value of considered spaces and the art of place-making, both internal and external, and how these contribute to good quality of life.

Alongside access into these interior worlds, this ambitious programme also offers: a children’s workshop at the Hunt Museum; an opportunity to take part in a ‘Hidden Limerick’ promenade tour which will reveal the private lives contained beyond the public façade; the narrative of Limerick’s rich industrial heritage will be unfolded with the inclusion of the Limerick Docks campus and buildings such as Ballantyne Mill, Ranks Silo Cleeves Factory and Thomond Weir fisheries building; an art exhibition showcasing work of  Limerick School of Art & Design (LSAD) Visual Communication students; a photographic competition which will be accessed through Twitter.

‘The diversity of scale and building types and works incorporated into the programme certainly make this a very exciting Open House Limerick event, and we hope that our communities really enjoy this celebration of the buildings of the Limerick region,’ said Maria Donoghue, Open House Limerick committee member. Open House was established in London in 1992 as an initiative to show first-rate architecture to the public, stirring an interest for urban built heritage. Limerick is a member organisation of the Open House Worldwide Family, which also includes Dublin, Cork, Belfast, London, New York, Helsinki, Melbourne and Rome.

The festival will be publicly launched at 8pm on Friday 7 October in the recently refurbished Narrative4  premises on O’Connell Street, and a fund-raising table quiz will take place in the Shannon Rowing Club at 8pm on Saturday 8 October. Booking is essential for many venues, and will be available on the website from Monday 26 September 2016.
